Maleficent is a 2014 dark fantasy adventure film directed by Robert Stromberg from a screenplay by Linda Woolverton. Starring Angelina Jolie as the eponymous Disney villainess character, the film is a live-action re-imagining of Walt Disney's 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty, and portrays the story from the perspective of the antagonist, Maleficent.

An elderly woman narrates and tells the story of Maleficent, a young and powerful fairy living in the Moors, a magical realm bordering a human kingdom. As a young girl, she falls in love with a human peasant boy named Stefan, whose infatuation with Maleficent is overshadowed by his ambition to become king. As they grow older, the two drift apart until one day Stefan stops coming to see her. After Maleficent defeats the current king in battle during an attack on the Moors, the king becomes fatally ill and he offers his crown to whoever kills Maleficent. Stefan visits her at night and drugs her, but can't bring himself to kill her. Instead he burns off her wings using iron (a lethal substance to fairies) and presents them to the king as proof she was slain. Heartbroken by Stefan's betrayal and the loss of her wings, Maleficent begins building a darker kingdom in the faerie realm. Maleficent rescues a raven named Diaval, who swears to serve her for life; he serves as her one companion and confidant, constantly being shape-shifted from man to bird and other animals as she needs him.
One day, Diaval informs Maleficent that Stefan, now king, is hosting a christening for his newborn daughter, Aurora. In retaliation for Stefan's betrayal, Maleficent arrives uninvited and curses the baby with a sleeping curse to take effect on her 16th birthday after pricking her finger on a spinning wheel spindle. However, after making Stefan beg her for mercy, she gives the curse an antidote in true love's kiss, meant to be irony towards the "true love's kiss" Stefan gave Maleficent on her own 16th birthday. Stefan has all the spinning wheels in the kingdom burned and locked away and he sends Aurora off to live with three pixies hidden deep in the woods until the day after her 16th birthday. King Stefan, haunted by guilt, grows increasingly paranoid of Maleficent and her vengeance against him.
